Descriptions

This house is the first home for our client, making it the beginning of our client’s new chapter of life with their small family.

Like the name ‘Tilt House’, part of the shape of the house are designed tilted inwards the house to represent an open door, giving a sense of welcoming. On this basis, we name this project as the ‘Tilt House’.

This represents an entrance, a pathway to the new world and the word ‘Open Door’ itself symbolizes one’s beginning to start a new journey.

For someone entering a new world, it is important to have a significant difference between the old and new. Therefore we gathered the problems that our client had in their previous home (which is their parents’ house). Their previouse home was an old building with the site not very wide, but extending back. Hence, the old house didn’t have enough open space that can provide sufficient lighting and good air circulation. This problem became the main focus for us to come up with a good solution for their new house.

In ‘Tilt House’, we place lots of skylight in more closed areas surrounded by walls, so that those areas can get sufficient day light from the sun. The number of skylights in areas inside the house makes it more energy saving. During the day, the usage of electricity is very minimal. Besides that, lots of sun light entering the house are making it healthy and comfortable to do day-time activities.

Another solution that we offer our client is creating a large void inside the house, with the dimension of 4,5m x 2m and placing it towards the back of the house to let the air come in from the front, enabling the air to circulate properly within house (cross ventilation can occur inside this house). With cross ventilation enabled, the temperature of this house can go lower, making the house feels cooler. The void that we created is not decreasing the size of the house, because the top of the void is surrounded by louvre and we use glass roof as a lid. This way, the area below the void can still be properly used.

Finishing materials for a house are one of the most important elements that can give a new impression to the user. We chose finishing materials with natural elements for this house. The use of wood and stone elements create a beautiful and natural impression, even though they are actually living in the middle of a crowded city. This will make the owner or client feel a very significant difference when entering this house (New World).
